Melanesian Airlines Agreement

A partnership agreement between the Melanesian airlines of Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands and Vanuatu has been signed and is now in force. The MOU will see shared promotion and sales of Solomon Airlines, Air Vanuatu and Air Niugini and a codeshare arrangement on a PNG to Vanuatu route via Solomon Islands.

Solomon Airlines commercial services manager, Gus Kraus told Radio New Zealand International the partnership is just the beginning. He said they hope it will expand to include Melanesian carriers in Fiji and New Caledonia in future.

Mr Kraus said within the agreement, they have basically got, a statement of objectives the three airlines would like to see and in specific the Port Moresby to Vila to Honiara route.

“Then some general principles about some future mutual benefits between the three airlines and the three countries as far as air services are concerned,” he said.

“We are all leaning towards beginning of June to sort of start off our new code share arrangements.”

 Fiji’s absence

Fiji Airways managing director/chief executive, Stefan Pichler, when the news about this partnership was announced the past month, had said the airline was unable to comment on the partnership. He had said they would wait until more specific details are released on the matter.

Given this partnership is called the Melanesia Aviation Partnership, Fiji’s absence from the group is quite evident.

This is as it is Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, Solomon Islands and Kanak and Socialist National Liberation Front (FLNKS) of New Caledonia which forms the Melanesian Spearhead Group. While Fiji Airways does not fly into Papua New Guinea, it does fly into Solomon Islands every Tuesday from Nadi and from next month on a Saturday.

Fiji Airways also flies into Vanuatu every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Nadi and every Sunday from Nausori. The only direct flight into Port Moresby is provided by Air Nuigini from Nadi every Monday, Wednesday and Saturday.
