Samoa A is looking at the 2015 World Rugby Pacific Challenge as a chance for their players to impress selectors of the Manu Samoa team for the Rugby World Cup 2015.

This was the sentiment echoed by team manager Isaia Lemeko in Suva yesterday.

“All of our players are based in Samoa and this tournament provides the platform for these young talents to prove their worth,”Lemeko said.

And that is to win the challenge and make it into the Manu Samoa team for the 2015 RWC.

“Much like Fiji and Tonga, we also tend to select most of our overseas-based players for the squad and the local talents lose out, but with this tournament we’re giving them a chance.

“This tournament is really a stepping stone to make the cut. We know the games are going to be tough with most of our players being in Samoa but we’ll be doing the best we can.”

Lemeko said the new format benefitted all the teams competing.

“The tournament helps in terms of easing the financial constraints we faced in the past having to travel from one country to another. Now World Rugby has brought the tournament to the Pacific which is such a huge help for us Pacific teams.

“Not only that but I believe they also benefit Japan, Canada and Argentina as well as all of Tier Two so we’re very thankful to World Rugby for this positive change.”

Lemeko urged the local Samoan community to support to the tournament and the team.

“Come out in numbers and support us. I know we’ve got quite a big Samoan community here in Suva so we’re calling on everyone to come out to the ANZ Stadium.”
