WEATHER UPDATE: Tropical Cyclone Pam To Intensify By Next Week

Weather Situation – Late last evening Tropical Disturbance 11F was upgraded to tropical cyclone status and named Tropical Cyclone PAM, and at 6am this morning the centre of Category 1 TC PAM was near 9S 170E some 1200km to the northwest of Nadi.

Currently TC Pam is slow moving, however in recent hours a trend towards a southeast trajectory has become evident. Further intensification is anticipated over coming days and computer models continue to predict a severe tropical cyclone of Category 4 or 5 intensity at its peak towards the end of next week over the southwest Pacific.

The south to southeast movement is expected to continue with the centre passing the latitude of Port Vila and Nadi during the day on Friday. There is still a chance that the track may shift a little eastwards placing Fiji more directly in the path of TC PAM. The best approach is to stay alert to the potential threat posed by this system and listen for updates over coming days.

There is another cyclone likely to form much further west over the Coral Sea closer to Australia, and this cyclone may move closer towards Fiji later next week. Additionally, computer forecasts suggest that there could perhaps be more tropical systems developing after this event in our proximity, so please remain alert through the next few weeks.

For Fiji – Humid again this morning with a mix of sun and clouds. Isolated showers, especially over the maritime regions of the eastern and central divisions early this morning, and long fine intervals also. Mostly sunny skies at first but look for increasing high clouds later in the day with skies becoming a little more hazy. Chance of one or two heavy falls with isolated thunderstorms this evening about the interior and western regions of Viti Levu. Moderate east to northeasterly winds freshening.

Outlook for the next 72 hours – Tomorrow will see rain developing with mostly cloudy skies as northeasterly winds strengthen.  Thursday will bring overcast skies and periods of rain heavy at times with northerly winds gusting to 65kmph as TC PAM intensifies to the northwest and starts to move closer to Fiji.

Friday will likely see the centre of the cyclone to our west and at peak intensify with squally northerly winds and periods of heavy rain. Local flooding is likely Thursday and Thursday. You should consider your cyclone response plans today and ensure you have adequate resources should conditions deteriorate.
