The Tonga A team visited Ratu Sukuna Memorial School yesterday.

And they renewed historic links between the late Fijian chief/statesman Ratu Sukuna, the people of Fiji and Tonga.

RSMS is the adopted school for the team during the World Rugby Pacific Challenge which started on Tuesday.

The team received a rousing welcome as soon as they came through the school gate.

School principal Joeli Naleca said it was a special occasion to renew traditional ties.

“The school is named after one of Fiji’s prominent chiefs and statesmen Ratu Sukuna,” Naleca said.

“There is a special connection between us and Tonga so this is a God-given chance for us.

“The whole school is behind Tonga and we will be there on Saturday to cheer them on against the Argentina Pampas.”

Team manager Manu Mataele echoed the same sentiments.

“The two islands have been connected traditionally for a long time and our visit here to RSMS is very special to us to renew our traditional ties,” he said.

After four months of preparation, the side  aim to topple the Pampas this Saturday.

“They beat the Telecom Fiji Warriors on Tuesday and we will try to beat them on Saturday,”Mataele said.

“All our players are locals because we want to promote the game back at home.

“This tournament is special to our local boys because this is the only international tournament in a year they get to participate in.”
