Athletics Fiji Mourn Bainimoli

Shop N Save Athletics Fiji is mourning the death of the former national sprinter Inoke Bainimoli.

The Naivilaca, Noco, Rewa native died on March 5 and will be laid to rest tomorrow after a farewell service at the Raiwai Methodist Church.

Bainimoli and Athletics Fiji president Jo Rodan took part in the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.

Bainimoli ran in the 100 metres heats with Olympic legend Carl Lewis.

“He usually talks about that race,”his relative Tomasi Vakatora said yesterday.

“He actually started better and edged Lewis for a few yards before the US champion cruised through with ease. But it’s that moment that Inoke cherished.”

Rodan rated Bainimoli as one of the best sprinters.

“ It’s sad that Fiji has lost one of its best sprinters during his time,”he said.

“Inoke was a great competitor and was one of the athletes that made me work overtime to ensure that I maintain my domination. He was very friendly and always worked hard to do his best on the track and at work at Telecom Fiji Limited.”
