The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji acting chief executive, John Tunidau, is looking to engage more closely with shipping stakeholders to ensure a unified approach to service delivery.

“We want to set up an approach that is all encompassing and inclusive to ensure that our services meet their needs,” he said.

“Also to find out ways we can work together in improving the standards of Fiji maritime safety and the protection of the marine environment.”

As far achievements go, the regulatory authority already has legislations in place that are reflective of 13 International Maritime Conventions.

“MSAF recently signed a Recognised Organisations (RO) Agreement with the Korean Register. It also has signed RO Agreements with other international classification societies,” he said.

It is also preparing for the Mock Audit that will be conducted by International Maritime Organisation by midyear.

Mr Tunidau hopes this would overall fulfill the core role of the organisation which is committing to ensure safety of life at sea and the protection of the marine environment.

“We will work closely with our stakeholders to ensure this is realised,” he said.

About John Tunidau

After being with Government Shipping Services for four years (1997-2001), Mr Tunidau moved to the organisation from when it was called Fiji Islands Maritime Safety Authority (FIMSA).

He has extensive sea time experience as an engineering officer both on local and especially foreign-going vessel.

Mr Tunidau worked through most if not all divisions of FIMSA/MSAF including survey and inspection division, qualification and licensing and regulatory divisions.

He was eventually appointed the chairperson of the Marine Review Committee that had undertaken the review of the Marine Act 1986.

He has been instrumental in the formulations of maritime legislations included Maritime Transport Decree and the Ships Registrations Decree.
