Iowane Apisai Draiva and Trevor Mervyn Tamblyn were yesterday sentenced to five and four years respectively by Judge Thushara Rajasinghe at the High Court in Lautoka.

The two had been convicted on one count of Importation of Controlled Chemicals contrary to Section 6 (b) of the Illicit Drugs Control Act.

The court found both persons guilty for acting in a joint enterprise and illegally importing 584.4 grams of the controlled chemical pseudoephedrine into the country between March 26 and April 1, 2014.

The court heard that the drug was contained in a package containing a bottle of Jonson & Jonson baby powder and toys. Judge Rajasinghe said the main purpose of sentencing was to deter others from committing similar offences.

Draiva in mitigation stated that he had two young daughters while 69-year-old Tamblyn said he was remorseful for his actions. He added he had eight children, four of which have been taken away by the State.

Draiva was sentenced to five years while Tamblyn was sentenced to four years and both would serve a non-parole period of three years.
