Forty-two students of Toga District School in Rewa enjoyed taking part in the Get Into Rugby (GIR) programme on Tuesday.

The programme, was launched in Fiji, last year, and is part of the World Rugby strategy to grow the game globally.

Fiji Rugby Union development officer Alivereti Mocelutu said Year One-Year Three students were introduced to non-contact rugby and were taught the basics of the game.

“The GIR programme is to teach children basic skills of rugby like ball handling and passing but no contact rugby is involved,”Mocelutu said.

“The programme involved both girls and boys.

“We had 42 participants taking part and they really enjoyed the programme.”

The programme promotes the value of the game and ensures children are encouraged to play rugby in a safe and progressive environment.

Mocelutu and former national 7s head coach Etuate Waqa will be in Ovalau next week to introduce the programme.
