What happened:

Tonga A grabbed their first win in the third round of the World Rugby Pacific Challenge after defeating Junior Japan 60-24 at the ANZ Stadium yesterday.

The Tongans scored a bonus point in the first half after scoring five tries. Their first try was scored by their winger Siale Talakai in the first minute by fullback Viliami Mavae.

Tonga continued to build pressure in the first half securing most possessions as blindside Fotu Lokotui scored their second try. Topiese Ahia, Samuele Fiefia and Frank Havea scoring a try each in the first half and Mavae was successful with three conversions.

The Japanese flyhalf Ryuji Noguchi scored the lone try for Japan in the first half after a brilliant set piece move by the forwards.

Halftime: Tonga 31-7 Junior Japan.

Tonga lifted the intensity in the second half as their powerful forwards pack continues to dominate with Samuela Fiefia scoring their sixth try.

Japan replied with a quick try just two minutes later to  Ataata Moerakiora in the 50th minute.

Big play: Tonga A regrouped well and their pack dominate play.

Star turn:

Junior Japan never gave up and scored two tries.

Comments; Tonga Technical Advisor Tevita Tuifua applauded the Japanese for their performance.

“Full credit to Japan for giving us a good game and thank the boys for their great performance.”

Japan Captain Go Maeda said;

“We know this game is different from the other two games so we aimed to win.

“It’s good we have come here and have established our core team for the Junior World Championships in July.
