The Fijian Under-19 team’s victory  paves the way forward for the nation, says Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.
This was after they qualified last month in New Zealand to take part 2016 ICC Under-19  World Cup in Bangladesh.
The Prime Minister made the comments during the official celebration at the Holiday Inn Suva last night.

Bainimarama congratulated the national side for being the first representative team to qualify for an ICC event.

“Congratulations to our Fijian U19 team for winning the ICC East Asia Pacific World Cup Qualifiers in New Zealand,” he said.

“We are here not only to celebrate your victory but also to recognise each of you as fine ambassadors of Fiji.

“By winning this qualifying tournament, you have gone further than any other young Fijian cricket team before you.

“You are bound for the World Cup in Bangladesh next year to proudly take the field alongside global cricket heavyweights such as Australia, England, New Zealand and South Africa.

“This is a great achievement. We may be accustomed to facing these nations on the rugby field but I am proud to see Fijian cricket achieve the same level of excellence.”

Bainimarama said in addition to the historic qualification of the Vodafone Fijian Under-20 Football team to this year’s FIFA Under-20 World Cup, the youths were paving the way for the country.

“It comes after the Fijian U20 men’s soccer team won the Oceanic Championship to qualify for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup. This was the first time a Fijian international side had made it to the final stages of a FIFA world event at any level.”

The 2016 ICC Under-19 World Cup will be in Bangladesh from January 22 to February 14.
