Loraini Namoumou was excited but fearful at the same time about her first deployment outside Fiji.

But she is grateful for the support from the 40-member team.

Mrs Namoumou is a midwife at the Lautoka Hospital. She is one of three women who will assist Tropical Cyclone Pam survivors in Vanuatu.

“Professionally I’m ready to go out there and do my job, but since this is my first time – I’m a bit nervous.”

Mrs Namoumou has 18 years of work experience in her field.

Eseta Bui, who is also a midwife at the Lautoka Hospital is looking forward to the challenges. Like her colleague, this is also the first time she is on an overseas mission.

“We are going because of the assessment on the ground by Fijian Government officials, is that midwives are needed,” she said.

“Where we will be deployed is not known. We will find out when we get there.”

For Losena Daveta, an operation theatre nurse, also based at the Lautoka Hospital, this will be her second overseas deployment.

She had also served in the Golan Heights.

The paramedic’s team, consisting of medical officers, health inspectors, midwives and nurses, will provide operations on the Island of Ambrym.

Ambrym is a volcanic island in Malampa Province in the archipelago of Vanuatu.

The areas of service will be food quality control, vector control, water, sanitation and outreach on health education.

The medical team will be in Vanuatu for two weeks and will return on April 6.
