The Fiji Roads Authority has confirmed the temporary closure of the Vunivaivai Bridge in Nakelo, Tailevu.

The structure has been deemed to be no longer safe for use by vehicles. The decision to close the bridge was not taken lightly because the need to protect the safety of the travelling public, who have been using this bridge, is paramount.

The construction of the new Vunivaivai Bridge is scheduled to commence in April this year.

Fletcher Construction has been awarded the tender to design and build four bridges that include the Vunivaivai Bridge, Vunidilo Bridge, Lomawai 1 and Cogeloa FSC1.

In the meantime as a temporary measure, motorists along Bau Road, Wainibokasi Road and Ratu Kadavulevu Road are reminded to take alternative routes in the area if travel plans include travelling to either sides of the Vunivaivai Bridge.

As an advisory measure the bridge and intersections leading to Vunivaivai have been signposted.

Members of the public are advised to stay clear of this structure for their own safety.
