Six-year-old Maraya Grace of Kashmir, Lautoka, is still trying to adjust to her new life after her leg was amputated earlier this month.

Her grandmother, Vilisi Tiko, said her granddaughter was eager to play with the other children in her neighbourhood, but could only do so now in her wheelchair handed over to her by Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama.

“She is still very shy to go out with her wheelchair and her attendance at school usually depends on her mother having a day off. If her mother is working in the afternoon then Maraya will go to school for half a day,” Mrs Tiko said.

Maraya Grace, had only just started Year One at Lautoka Methodist School, when she was struck by a vehicle near her home in Kashmir, Lautoka.

Mrs Tiko said teachers and students of Lautoka Methodist School had been very supportive and generous in terms of offering to help Maraya make her way around in the wheelchair.

“Her mum has been going with her, but I can sense that she is still new to the fact that her leg is gone now. It’s good that teachers are trying to assist her in catching up with her school work and this makes it easier on her parents,” she said.

She said despite Maraya’s attendance issues, she was fast in catching up with her school work.

“Her state at the moment is sad, but the wheelchair is one way of encouraging her because she can now roll out and see her friends. She is trying her best to hop and  knowing her she will not want to be too dependent,” Mrs Tiko said.
