Operators of the MV Uluinabukelevu signed a two-year contract yesterday with Government to serve the eastern side (Baba Ceva) of Kadavu under the Government Franchise scheme.

The franchise contract starts today.

The passenger and cargo vessel, owned by Valesasa Transportation Company, successfully won the tender for this route but lost out on the Lomaiviti route.

This is an additional voyage compared to the monthly trips.

In addition to this, the company has extended its services to charter services.

Company managing director Ilaitia Caginavanua said the past six months has been a progressive one for the company.

“We are glad with the awarding of the Kadavu franchise where we have two voyages per month.

“As a result, a lot more villages along the uneconomic route side of the island will be visited,” Mr Caginavanua said.

Having access to shipping services at least once a week for a number of remote villages on Kadavu Island has brought relief and satisfaction to the people.

These villagers who were once deprived of shipping services in the past used to pay around $300 and even more for outboard fiberglass boats.

This is mainly to transport their cargo including building materials from the Vunisea Jetty to their villages as the other two bigger shipping companies only stopped at the jetties in Kavala in the northern upper part of Kadavu and Vunisea.

The MV Uluinabukelevu’s fornightly trip to the eastern side (Baba Ceva) of the island has brought positive development to the people.

“We are achieving the satisfaction of satisfying the needs of our people – this is why we purchased the vessel in the first place because the lack of shipping services that came directly to our shore.”
