The Fiji National University (FNU) is taking a proactive approach to clean up Saweni beach on April 13.

The beach lies on the outskirts of Lautoka city, which is about a 10-minute drive from the city.

The university’s Department of Environmental Science, Associate Professor Dr Ajantha Perera, said the event was in line in celebrating Earth Day.

“We have been speaking a lot about how unclean Saweni beach is and we have been spending a good amount of time searching for the best options to keep Saweni beach clean on a long term basis,” she said.

“Saweni beach is valuable to all who live in and around Lautoka, so its cleanliness is a benefit to many.”

The university students, school students, villagers of Lauwaki and neighbouring communities will gang up to clean the Saweni beach area.

“All our attempts will be to rejuvenate the beauty of Saweni and ensure that the communities will begin to respect the beautiful beach of Saweni as their own home,” Ms Perera said.

The university will hold a workshop on climate change at its Lautoka Campus on April 10 from 9am.
