The Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama, recently visited the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Family History Centre in Samabula, Suva.

The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs Permanent Secretary, Savenaca Kaunisela, and the deputy chief executive officer Apakuki Kurusiga.

LDS Family History Country director Tueri Senikuraciri said the centre held copies of birth, death and marriage records of Fijians, Rotumans and members of the general population from 1874 to 1989 and that Indian ancestral records date from 1912 to 1989.

“Eight family history centres are being operated by the Church,” he said.

Following the visit, Mr Bainimarama stopped over at the church’s Fiji Distribution Centre where scriptures, teaching manuals, journals, magazines and other items are available.

Mr Bainimarama thanked the church for hosting him and said the visit opened his eyes to what the Church did and was impressed with the facilities and what he had seen.

Family Search is the largest genealogy organisation in the world and since 1894, they have worked with archives, libraries, and churches in over 100 countries to facilitate economical access to records that help people find their ancestors.
