Bigger, Better Women Expo

The Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation is planning to make the National Women’s Expo in October bigger and better than last year.

Minister Rosy Akbar said one of the first steps to ensure this was the introduction of divisional craft shows that would be held in all divisions in partnership with the Fiji Arts Council.

Ms Akbar said the shows would be held until next month to provide an opportunity for women groups in Fiji to market their skills and talents through their handicrafts.

“The Expo will be a gateway to enhance their skills and connect the locally produced items to new markets. This will be possible through an integrated approach within government ministries and corporate bodies,” Ms Akbar said.

“The Expo will create opportunities for women to acquire skills to help them reach their maximum potential as women leaders and entrepreneurs.”

The objective of the Expo is to enhance opportunities for rural women to improve their lives and help eradicate poverty.

A planning committee led by Ms Akbar is developing the programmes for the national expo.

She said more women groups had been invited to take part in the national expo.

Ms Akbar confirmed that $133,152 was earned by 448 women’s groups that participated in the inaugural national expo at the Vodafone Arena last year.
