It was an exciting morning for Year One students of Suva’s Annesley Methodist Infant School as 282 students sat eagerly in front of their classrooms waiting to receive their share of free packaged milk and Weet-Bix at the school yesterday.

This follows a promise kept by the FijiFirst Government, which was first launched at Nakelo two weeks ago.

School headteacher Semi Vula was thankful to the Government for bringing happiness to children through the distribution of the free breakfast.

“This initiative is very interesting for the kids. It brings happiness for them first of all and includes healthy food that they should be eating instead of taking in junk food,” he said.

“In the past weeks there were people standing outside the school with all sorts of junk food and I had a hard time chasing them from here because the snacks they were selling weren’t good for the children’s health.

“About three weeks ago we had a dental team here and we had reports on a lot of tooth decay because of the junk food they have been eating. This initiative really helps a lot because they have something nutritious to eat in the morning,” he said.

Mr Vula said the school has some children who come from disadvantaged families and this initiative was an advantage for the children because the milk and Weet-Bix was free and healthy.

The free breakfast programme, in partnership with CJ Patel Fiji Dairy, will involve providing free Weet-Bix to Year One students along with 250 millilitres of milk per student per day to schools nationwide.

There are 730 primary schools all together in Fiji.
