Villagers of Nakama and residents living in nearby settlements will soon have access to a safer and better Irish crossing.

The crossing is being built by the Fiji Roads Authority.

Nakama sugarcane farmer Freddy Qareqare said he pleased that work on the Irish crossing was almost complete.

“I rely a lot on the crossing and very happy that it will complete soon,” he said.

The new crossing serves as the only means of transporting harvested cane for farmers in the area and supplies for the farm.

Same sentiments were also shared by Navitalai Setoki. He said the villagers have been waiting for a long time for construction to start.

“With two schools on the other side, students too rely a lot the crossing,” he said.

“The project will also help vehicle owners in the area on their daily routines.”

It is understood that the crossing would also include new pavement and road surface, and would be a metre higher compared to the previous one.
