The Ministry of Lands is in the process of developing a new Property Evaluation Act.

This was highlighted by Deputy Secretary, Malakai Nalawa, while presenting to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) yesterday.

He said other Pacific island states had relevant acts except Fiji.

“The Act will assist us in terms of assessment of rentals and other administration,” Mr Nalawa said.

He also stated that through their new data harmonisation process, they had received numerous reports of illegal subdivisions of Agriculture leases especially in the West.

PAC chairman Biman Prasad responded and said: “It is important for you to consider a good database because if you don’t have a good view of what is on the ground or in your system, then you will not be able to make important decisions,” Mr Prasad said.

Mr Prasad also questioned the ministry on its plans to pay its total $24m arrears.

Mr Nalawa said:

“The arrears at the of the end of last year was $29m and this when we started to embark with this new operation we term as Saumia, we formed a team who managed to collect so far $24m, in the first quarter this year they have collected $4.6m and through an agreement with the Ministry of Finance, we should be able to clear 90% of that arrears by the end of this year, “he said.

Representatives from the Auditor -General’s Office recommended that the ministry should make proper considerations in updating their data.
