The University of the South Pacific’s student council body has heard that a $10million campus will soon be built in Lautoka.

This was revealed during a meeting of student body presidents of the 14 campuses and centres around the 12-member Pacific island countries held at the Labasa Campus this week.

USP Lautoka Campus student council president Nitin Singh said the campus faced a shortage of space.

“The campus caters for 1300 students and sometimes space can be very difficult to find for studying or group discussions,” Mr Singh said.

He said the university had already leased a four-acre piece of land where the campus would be built.

Mr Singh said the shortage of space was attributed to the high number of students enrolling.

“With the new campus more West students who are leaving for the Laucala Campus in Suva will now stay and study in Lautoka.”

Meanwhile, this is one of the Vice Chancellor Professor Rajesh Chandra strategic plans this year.

According to the USP website, Professor Chandra said approval has been given for the construction of additional student accommodation and in-principle approval for the construction of the campus in Lautoka.

The government of the Solomon Islands has given the university 100 hectares of land for the construction of a new campus as well.
