When he was told that without qualification he could not expect a pay rise, Filimoni Batiniu decided to get a trade certificate in what he does best.

Carpentry is what he loves and the need to for a better income to support his family drove the Nadala, Nadarivatu, villager to enrol at the Australia Pacific Technical College.

He graduated yesterday from APTC with a Certificate III in Carpentry and was elated to be able to fulfill his dream.

“I applied in 2009, but got accepted in 2013 and I finally graduated today,” Mr Batiniu said.

“I think it was worth the wait to finally graduate and feel secure with my trade.”

He said while working at Malolo Island as a carpenter, he was told that he could not get a pay rise because he did not have any qualifications.

“After hearing this, I resigned and since I had no qualification after Form Five, I thought to get a trade certificate,” Mr Batiniu said.

Mr Batiniu is married with five children and he feels that education does not end at any stage or age.

“I was 37 years old when I applied and I am graduating at 40,” he said.

“So don’t be discouraged if your age is catching up because like the saying goes, life begins at 40 and I believe that.”

He followed the footsteps of his father who was a carpenter and building his own house was his first carpentry job.

His wife, Sisilia Ema, was emotional after her husband highlighted her overwhelming support for his education.

“I think I am the second biggest support because God has been with us and we thank him for his blessings,” she said.

“I am overwhelmed and I agree that age is not a barrier when it comes to education.”
