The head of the Catholic Church in Fiji, Archbishop Peter Loy Chong is advising parents to be mindful of what their children do on the internet, especially social media.

The archbishop said as times had changed, youths had been engaging themselves on sites and social media sites.

“Social media from a church perspective maybe a great contribution. We encourage our youths to use the social media for the work of spreading the Gospel because that is where people who did not go to church meet. It has its good side and bad sides,” Archbishop Loy Chong said.

“Youths can access pornography. They can also use sites to bully or prey on other people. At home, parents need to be aware of what their children are doing.”

Archbishop Chong said instead of stirring up trouble, youths should use social media sites to be agents of change because this was a step toward globalisation.

“It is not a problem, but a change. We all know entertainment is an addiction and times are changing. There was a time when cinemas were a hot spot, but now you see kids hanging around in internet shops.  Community leaders can use these sites to be a powerful agent for change,” he said.
