It is important that we conserve our resources, Cakaudrove chiefs were told yesterday at the Cakaudrove Provincial Council meeting.

The Ministry of iTaukei Land Trust Board permanent secretary and chairman of the National iTaukei Resource Owners committee, Savenaca Kaunisela, said: “We should conserve our resources like water, land, forests and animals as it is a source of life for us and our future generations.

Mr Kaunisela was speaking at the meeting in Yaroi Village, Savusavu.

“We should know how our resources are to be used so that it is easy for us to make decisions about it,” he said.

Mr Kaunisela reminded those attending the meeting they should think before they sell their land because some landowners were now regretting it.

“Before you sell your land think about the future and what it would mean for you, your family and the future generations in the long term,” Mr Kaunisela said.

Some of the council members raised concerns on how some land were sold but after looking at the land development impact the traditional landowners wanted it back.

“Business will always be business because once the land is sold it belongs to the new owner and you can’t get it back unless you can pay them back.”
