The Fiji Corrections Service handed over a cheque of $10,000 to the Ministry of National Disaster Management to help those affected by Severe Tropical Cyclone Pam in Vanuatu.

Commissioner of Corrections Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu said the Service wanted to contribute in relief efforts for Vanuatu.

“The donation came from the welfare of the Fiji Corrections Service. It is a contribution from our officers,” Lieutenant-Colonel Vasu said.

The Minister for National Disaster Management, Inia Seruiratu said monies donated for cyclone relief would be deposited in the Prime Minister’s Relief and Rehabilitation Fund Trust Account.

He said the rest of the goods donated would be sent to Vanuatu next week.

“We are planning on sending the rest of the storages across and Pacific Agencies have come to our assistance. The boat probably will be here next week for loading in Suva and Lautoka and departing on April 17. It arrives in Vanuatu on the 19th and we’ll take the last trip of donation in time for our men and women there to distribute before they return,” Mr Seruiratu said.

He said Government had extended its assistance to Fijians helping out in Vanuatu by the end of this month and thanked the Fiji Corrections Service for its contribution.
