Fuel, Gas Price Down

Good news for motorists and vehicle owners around the country –the prices of fuel and Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) have been drastically reduced.

For the first time in the past eight years the prices of fuel per litre have dropped to below $2.

This was announced by Attorney-General and Minister for Finance, Public Service and Public Enterprises, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum yesterday.

The prices are effective from today and are the result of significant shifts in international market prices.

However, there will be a few price variations outside Suva and Lautoka. Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said: “Fiji is a price taker as opposed to the price maker.

“While we welcome the reductions in the prices, which is also very, very good news for everybody – individuals, households , taxis, buses, businesses and, of course, Government too.

“These are the changes we would obviously like to announce because we keep on continuously highlighting that these prices are determined by international markets,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

He added that while the reductions served as good news for the country, he advised the public to save energy.

“We would like to remind people not to waste energy. We cannot afford to waste energy. Government is still very focused on renewable energy,” Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said.

“Switch off lights at night when you are not using them. Do not continue to run machines that you are not using. We need to continue to save on energy because that is the focus.”

Mr Sayed-Khaiyum said the reduction was very significant for trade and investment and it reduced production costs for manufactured items.
