Kavita Mala was the lone Indo-Fijian woman to graduate with a Certificate III in Hospitality out of 14 hospitality students from the Australia Pacific Technical College (APTC) in Suva yesterday.

Mrs Mala was among the 129 students who graduated with certificates in different technical and vocational courses from the College.

Mrs Mala, 25, is from Nadi and has two young sons.

“I feel overwhelmed today because I struggled and sacrificed my family time during this six months training,” she said.

“One of the best things I learned was to be able to socialise with other races because I was the only Indian in this programme. I am glad because we have all been like a family.

“I had to stay away from my family, my two sons who are very young, but it was worth it.”

Mrs Mala, who missed her husband during graduation, said she was well supported by her family.

Another student from the same field, Christine Lia Iosefa, said her husband was also supportive.

“I am glad that he supported me throughout this time, as we have gone through difficult times as well,” she said.

She is married with three children.

“I am proud of her and her dedication towards study and nothing is impossible,” her husband, Veresa Taqasi said.

He said partners should be supportive if their spouses wanted to study or further their education.
