The delay in paying some teachers was clarified yesterday by the Ministry of Education.

The ministry’s director finance, Makereta Fuata, said salaries could only be released once schools confirmed their appointment.

She said school administrators needed to conform to the Ministry of Education (MOE) directives.

The issue of the delay in teachers’ salaries was raised yesterday at the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) by Opposition parliamentarian Aseri Radrodro.

“All the teachers when they come in, they sign their contract and then they report to the schools that they have been assigned to,”Mrs Taloga said.

“What we need from the schools are the confirmation that they have reported to duties and this is the cause of delay,” she said.

“Sometimes it takes weeks and months to do this and the Human Resource Department has been working tirelessly on this in ensuring that all teachers are paid within the payday or few weeks but teachers can raise their queries with the Ministry also.”

Mrs Taloga also stated that kindergarten teachers are now on the payroll system and are paid monthly.
