A gathering in the Western Division has been told of Government’s commitment to push awareness of environmental issues across as many platforms as possible in the country.

This message has been relayed by the Minister for Local Government, Housing and Environment, Parveen Kumar.

“Government is committed to spearhead transformational nation- wide environment programmes that will need to reach the grassroots level where our own communities and people are empowered to take full ownership for effective implementation,” he said.

Mr Kumar made the comments at the launching of the 3R’s national framework 2015 clean schools programme and home composting subsidy programme technical training workshop at the Tanoa Skylodge in Nadi.

He said managing waste and pollution was a pivotal role of the general public in terms of maintaining environmental cleanliness.

“We seriously need to change our mentality and embark on a transformational nationwide awareness programme that will incite telling behaviour al change at all levels. To protect our environment is always a challenging task for success requires durable and effective co-ordination,” he said.

Mr Kumar said there needed to be more partnership between willing players such as Government agencies, bilateral donors, the private sector and local communities because the task to control littering and improper waste management was not one that Government could achieve alone.

The clean schools programme particularly targets outstanding schools and respective municipal councils in terms of awareness on reducing, reusing and recycling (3R’s) concept.

He said it was crucial to educate the younger generation on excellent environmental stewardship.
