The Minister for Education, Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy, yesterday clarified that students from rural and maritime areas and those from the interior of Fiji would be given first preference at government boarding schools.

Mr Reddy clarified student placement restrictions to schools like Ratu Kadavulevu, Queen Victoria in Tailevu and Adi Cakobau at Sawani, Naitasiri.

“Boarding spaces are to be first given to rural and interior students as well as students from maritime areas who are disadvantaged because of the unavailability of a school around their residence,” Mr Reddy said.

“Any surplus spaces after this initial placement will then be given to students from urban areas.”

The decision to restrict boarding spaces arose out of lack of space because of overcrowding of boarding facilities in recent years.

At the beginning of every school year, parents from outer Islands and maritime islands turn up to school to enrol their child only to find out that there is no more space to accommodate their child, Mr Reddy said.

He said preference to students from afar would provide the appropriate space to disadvantaged and underprivileged students who otherwise might drop out of the school system because of a lack of boarding facilities.

He said that apart from the restriction of boarding spaces to first place to rural and maritime students, students from urban areas can still study at these schools as day scholars.

All students currently enrolled in these schools will be able to continue their studies until Year 13.
