Former Health Minister and FijiFirst Member of Parliament Doctor Neil Sharma has resigned from the Party.

This means he gives up his seat in Parliament.

Replacing him will be the candidate who received 33rd highest votes, Jijila Kumar.

A FijiFirst statement released yesterday confirmed this.

“Doctor Neil Sharma has tendered his resignation as a member of FijiFirst. Therefore, as provided for under the Constitution, he has vacated his seat as a Member of Parliament,” the statement said.

“As required under the Constitution, FijiFirst has informed the Speaker of Parliament of Doctor Neil Sharma’s resignation and has  drawn her attention to section 64(1), which allows the appointment of the next available candidate from FijiFirst.

“We wish Doctor Neil Sharma all the best for the future and thank him for his service to the nation as a minister and as a member of Parliament.”

Speaking to Fiji Sun yesterday, Dr Sharma said: “Yes I have handed in my resignation. It is upsetting, of course. Some things are said, and some things are best not said, but I gave it my best shot.

“My plans, well I’m a doctor by profession. I look after patients and there are few lines still open and I am getting old. I’m now in my 60s. I’d like to spend time with my family and rest.”

Dr Sharma served as Minister for Health after replacing Dr Jiko Luveni from 2009 to 2014 and was one of the 32 successful FijiFirst candidates in the 2014 General Election.
