Fiji is yet to realise its full potential as far as agri-business is concerned.

Government has introduced policies to encourage investment and we have in fact had quite a number of innovative agri-businesses.

But while there are investments, a concern is also that some businesses are not really sustainable.

So this week in our Leader’s Talk section, we decided to talk to some of those who have proved their success in this industry.

We hope these words will encourage those and act as tips for those who are getting into this industry.

Abdul Khan
Fiji Sugar Corporation Executive Chairman

Marco Polo International Ltd Managing Director
Simon Cole
Chairman of Yaqara Pastrol Company and businessman
Ratu Ilaitia Tuisese
Industry Board member, long-time agriculturalist
One important factor is the funding. Second to understand the market of the produce and thirdly sustainability. There are a lot of people who start business and they sign a contract to supply produce. They will do a good job for a few years and then they are not able to satisfy customers and meet the demand. It’s that long-term sustainability of business they need have. You need to be hands on, put in the hours and mitigate the risks. Muck in and make do!  Learn, innovate and, if possible, vertically integrate. Farming is a commitment to the future so you gotta love what you do! “ Focus on the basic production parameters in whatever agricultural enterprise you are involved in. Understand what you have to do to manage these production parameters.  Combine these production efficiencies to be able to sell into competitive markets. The market for the commodity is very important. First you need to know if there is a market for your business. There is huge demand in the tourism market and their import bill is large. For us to get a good agri base – identify a good market and get the ideal product that will serve the customer and plus you need to see the quality and consistency in supply.  You need to indentify the market and then you need to see you are able to satisfy the market and the volume and consistency. If you can’t have that – you would not be very successful in agriculture.
