The 28-year-old de-facto partner of the late Losana McGowan has sought time to engage a lawyer.

Usaia Kilaiverata appeared before the High Court in Suva yesterday for first call in relation to the alleged death of the former journalist and communication specialist.

The accused said he wished to engage a private lawyer. His charges were not read out in court.

It is alleged Ms McGowan died following a quarrel with Kilaiverata earlier this month.

It is also alleged the couple had returned to their Toorak flat in Suva from a nightclub when they had an argument.

The High Court was packed yesterday with family and friends of Ms McGowan including her mother.

The court has given three weeks for the accused to get a lawyer.

The matter has been adjourned to May 7 for the State to file information and disclosures, and the accused to get a lawyer.

Kilaiverata has been further remanded in custody.
