The Fiji Nursing Association (FNA) is encouraging its members to conduct their own research.

FNA general secretary Salanieta Matiavi says since everything in this day and age is evidence based, the nursing practice needs relooking at.

She made the comments during the FNA scientific conference at Studio 6 in Suva yesterday.

“This scientific conference has been ongoing but this year.

“A lot of nurses are now aware of it and they want to come in because they will need to earn professional points to be able to practice,” Ms Matiavi said.

“We award them six points if they are part of this conference.”

With the theme “A force for Change – Care effective, Cost effective”, nurses from the four divisions took advantage of the opportunity to learn from each other.

Nurse Salanieta Waqa, who is based at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital, said the conference served to motivate those in the service.

“I believe more of these types of conferences should be conducted because it helps to bring all nurses together to talk on the issues that we face and, at the same time, encourage each other to perform to the best of our abilities despite the negative criticism that we often receive from the public,” Mrs Waqa said.
