New Coach Vows To Give Best Shot

Fijian amateur boxing coach Pauliasi Ratu has vowed that the final team selected today to represent Fiji at the Pacific Games will win medals.

Ratu made the comment during the Fiji Amateur Boxing Association trials in Suva last night.

Ratu said they would give their best effort despite the short preparation time.

“There’s a lot of work to be done as far lifting Fiji back to the standard where we once were,” Ratu said.

“Boxing had always been a major medal winner for Fiji and we’ve a lot of ground to cover and that’s going to take time.

“But that doesn’t mean that the team going to the Pacific Games in July won’t be winning anything. We’re still going to compete and we will work hard to win medals.

“We’ll do our best. It’s just a matter of sticking to the basics, so we’ll be looking for fitness, weight and the other elements that make a strong athlete. We’re looking at selecting the three best boxers because we’ve had such a short notice.”

Ratu was pleased with the turnout of boxers last night.

“It’s very encouraging to see such a large turnout,” he said.

“We’ve got boxers coming from as far as Lautoka to attend the trial.

“This is a very positive indication that there’s such a wide pool of talent to choose from,” he said.
