The people of Nasavusavu in Savusavu, Vanua Levu, are expected to install their new chief by August.

This follows the death earlier this month of Tui Nasavusavu, Ratu Suliano Tagive Naulumatua who was buried yesterday.

Albert McLaren, the spokesperson for the chiefly family said the new chief would be installed after the observance of the 100 nights morning period.

“After all traditional protocols are conducted then the chiefly family will seat and discuss the matter further,” Mr McLaren said.

He said Ratu Golea Lovodua was the next heir to the title.

“After the 100 nights and the vakataraisulu (lifting of the mourning period) then the title issue would be discussed.”

He said the chiefly title had a lot of responsibilities and the people of Nasavusavu also had to plant the chief’s food and placing certain areas on Taboo like fishing grounds.

“Taboo of fishing ground would take three months. Not all fishing grounds will be on taboo because some areas will be allowed for the villagers to fish in.”

Mr McLaren said the chiefly family would be wearing black clothes for 100 nights.
