The fight to eliminate non-communicable diseases (NCD) is a major target of many non-governmental organisations (NGO) and the Ministry of Health in Fiji.

For the first time the villages welcomed the Rotary Club of Labasa to conduct health screening for the villagers of Niurua in the coast of Macuata.

The club and Vodafone ATH Foundation screened 126 villagers this week.

Niurua Village Youth Club president Mataiasi Qaroro said the village was fortunate to be visited by the team.

“The village is far from a health centre and Labasa Hospital, so health checks was not really taken seriously by many villagers,” Mr Qaroro said.

“We are happy that the health check was brought to our doorstep as most villages are reluctant of visiting the hospital for check-ups.”

Mr Qaroro said all villagers were screened.

Rotary Club project officer Peni Tabua said the club was focused on eliminating NCDs in the North.

“The visit has always been the same which is fighting towards the elimination of NCDs in Fiji,” Mr Tabua said.

“We inform the villagers of the importance of gardening to eat fresh vegetables and root crops.”
