Retired Officer Gets $15,000

Retired corrections officer Meli Vakatale could not contain his tears when he received a cheque of $15,000 from the Commissioner of Corrections, Lieutenant-Colonel Ifereimi Vasu at the Fiji Corrections Service’s Headquarters yesterday.

The sudden death, his wife, Sereana Vakatale, after a short illness left him in shock. The money is from his contributions to the Service’s Welfare For Life scheme.

Lt-Colonel Vasu said it was the first time that the payout was conducted to a retired officer who had decided to continue with his monthly instalments to the FCS Welfare for Life Scheme.

“The scheme is aimed at assisting officers and their families and most of the officers are also paying contributions for their spouses. This is a great initiative that we had started last year and this is all in a bid to look into the welfare of our officers,” he said.
