Security To Probe Alleged Assault

The University of the South Pacific Campus Security is currently investigating an alleged assault incident within the Laucala Campus in Suva.

It is alleged that a member of the University of the South Pacific Students Association (USPSA) Federal Council, assaulted Wansolwara student editor, Sonal Singh.

The school head of journalism, Shailendra Singh, said in a press release that a complaint would be lodged with Police soon.

It is alleged the incident occurred near the University’s library on Sunday over a news report on the Journalism Students Wansolwara newspaper about the auditing of USPSA finances.

According to the statement the executive member had allegedly threatened the student editor and then punched him in the face, based on claims that Sonal Singh’s article had wrongly accused the USPSA Federal Council of not producing audited financial reports.

“There seems to be an attitude among some that the way to seek redress from the media is through violence and intimidation,” Shailendra Singh said.

“Regardless of where this line of thinking emanates from, we need to resist it before it becomes more firmly embedded in our societies. Intolerance of criticism is simply harmful and debilitating.”

Featured in Wansolwara was the USP Laucala Student Association’s failure to produce audited financial reports for the past five years.
