EDITORIAL: Faiz Khan Shows How Leadership On Merit Pays Off

Lawyer Faiz Khan has risen against all odds and above all threats to show nothing is impossible.

His exemplary leadership and guidance have made Fiji Pine Group of Companies and Airports Fiji Limited two of our best-performing state-owned enterprises .

As the executive chairman of these two important entities, Mr Khan has successfully set a benchmark as far as financial performance is concerned.

The turnaround of Fiji Pine Group of Companies and Airports Fiji Limited’s exceptional performance are examples that with the right leadership, anything can be achieved.

The critical message is that such appointments should be on merit. This is something that the Voreqe Bainimarama-led FijiFirst Government is stressing. And it is paying dividends

Prime Minister Bainimarama paid special tribute to Mr Khan the past week for his financial and commercial acumen and his leadership.

It came in light of the exceptional performance of the Fiji Pine Group of Companies which recorded a $26 million turnaround in profits.

Mr Bainimarama said this was an industry that critics had written off. But it was now excelling and making a significant contribution not just to the national economy but also importantly to the landowners.

Mr Bainimarama acknowledged the manner in which Mr Khan had been able to get the best out of his staff and provide for them, with better conditions than ever before.

“This goes to show that if you have good employers and partnerships between management and workers, you do not need a confrontational approach to industrial relations,” he said.

Mr Khan took up the executive chairmanship at a time when many other capable people were reluctant to do so. This was given the threats being placed by some foreign countries against those taking up roles in our Government, or Government-linked enterprises.

The latest figures demonstrate Mr Khan was indeed the right person to give direction to the company which had so many unexplored possibilities.

Under his leadership, the Nadi International Airport modernisation project has taken off as well as landowners now receiving lease security bonus money. So not only are the landowners happy. So are the tourism industry stakeholders. A better and modernised Nadi airport stands to benefit all.

Mr Khan has successfully spread happiness all around. He’s done it because he’s the best person for the job.

And he was prepared to step up and do the job. This was despite those sanction threats from certain foreign governments. Plus the racial and religious intimidation attempts of some previously from here who still try to influence things here from afar.
