Farmers Prepare For Rotuman Day Yam Contest

Rotuman Farmers in Davuilevu Nausori held a yam competition last Saturday, as part of their preparations for Rotuman Day.

A much larger yam competition is set to take place when Rotuman Day arrives on May 13.

The Davuilevu/Nausori Rotuman Farmers Club held their yam contest at St Joseph the Worker school ground, in Nakasi last Saturday.

Davuilevu farmers and their families gathered for the competition during the weekend.

Club chairperson Salaitu Motofaga said the farmers began planting months in advance to prepare for this contest.

“We included dalo and sugar cane in the competition and we bought our families to have a good time together,” he said.

“This competition is a continuation from our four fathers in early times, so we decide to do this every year.

During the club’s competition, first time participant Ivao Kafoa, 67, took home the trophy for producing the heaviest yam.

“I would like to thank the lord, it’s a blessing. The yam is one-year-old and I took great care of it,” he said.

“I was surprised when I was announced as the winner. Some of the yams looked bigger, but when scaled, then we get to know the actual weight.” Mr Kafoa’s yam weighed in at 79.4kg.

Club member Tiu Mesulame, 60, said the competition gets stronger every year.

“It’s great that we are improving and getting heavier each year.

“The competition is related to a Rotuman celebration known as Rotuma Day,” he said.

The Rotuma Association will begin their yam competition on May 13. The contest next month is expected to attract competitions from other farm clubs from around Fiji and farmers from Rotuma.
