The Telecom Fijiana team has qualified for the Cup quarterfinals after they had a strong outing on the first day of the World Rugby Women Seven Series in Langford, Canada.

The Iliesa Tanivula-coached side plays New Zealand in the Cup quarterfinal at 5.44am today.

Fiji Rugby Union women’s development officer Vela Naucukidi commended the team for a much improved performance and anticipated bigger and better things in future for the team.

“Reaching the Cup stage is a big improvement from

the last tournament,” Naucukidi said.

“We hope they reach the semifinals or finals this time. It’ll be good for the promotion of women’s rugby in the country.

“It will also strengthen our campaign to qualify for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. We need to get into the Cup stages of the competition now if we expect to qualify for the Olympics next year. But so far we’re very pleased with the team’s progress.”

Vodafone Fiji 7s coach Ben Ryan also commended the women for their performance throughout the pool matches.

“I watched all their games and I can see lots of improvements,” Ryan said.

“They’ve grown a lot over the season and really did well in the pool games to hold their won against England and beat Spain.

“Obviously, they’ll be playing the number one team so all they can do is to just give it their best shot and work for a good day two. Congratulations to them for a job well done in getting into the Cup rounds which will help them in the long run.”
