Four masked men tied up the Post Mistress of Naleca Post Office, Kavala Bay, in Kadavu, before robbing the Post Office of $18,000.

The incident took place last month but has only come to light after Kavala villagers raised their frustrations over having to travel to Vunisea to send and receive mails.

The Post Office has been closed since and Post Fiji Limited is working on finding a new person to manage the Post Office.

It provides essential services for the islanders from banking to sending mail.

The Post Mistress, Akanisi Bale, is back in Suva undergoing counseling for post traumatic stress.

Post Fiji Limited’s head of retail and marketing Isaac Mow said they were planning to open the Post Office sometime this week.

Mr Mow said: “The staff quarters which was 10 meters away and situated at the back of the office had made it easier for the four men to enter the quarters without being caught and since they were masked, they could not easily be identified.”

The robbery happened around 10pm to 11pm.

The men allegedly used a knife and stick to scare the Post Mistress.

They then got of the office keys along with the keys to the Safe box. She did not suffer any injury.

The Post office is 400 to 500 metres away from the nearest village. It serves four villages from one tikina (district) and services more than 1000 people.

It is understood that three of the men were not from Kavala Bay and may have come from other parts of Kadavu or even Suva.

Meanwhile, Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said no one had been arrested and charged.

Ms Naisporo said investigations were still continuing.
