Experience is the most important component when it comes to defending the Pacific Games gold medal, says the national rugby league manager.

Speaking to SUNsports yesterday Ilisoni Rogoyawa said they were aware of the huge challenge that is in front of them.

“All the rugby league giants in the Pacific like hosts Papua New Guinea, Cook Islands and Tonga will be gunning for us,” he said.

“That is why we’ve working hard on our preparations and we are looking at some of the experienced players who will come on handy when the going gets tough.”

Rogoyawa said the 18-member squad have yet to have a training run together but the players were training in their respective zones where they are monitored by the development officers.

“I will be able to give more information once we have our training camp together.”

The Macuata native confirmed that veteran players like Asaeli Sorovaki of the Nadera Panthers, Nereo Cina and Esira Dokoni were part of the squad. He pointed out that they were still talking to veteran Jone Wesele of the Makoi Bulldogs as well.

“Jone is now in Australia but we are talking to him to see his availability,” he said.
