National Rugby League (NRL) officials are in Fiji to lift the standard of the sport in the country.

The comment was made by NRL Fiji manager Steve Bellsham in Suva yesterday.

“I will be based in Fiji for the next eight months,” Bellsham said.

“I’m here to provide education on coaching methods to the Fiji National Rugby League development staff, the Fiji National Sports Commission development staff, and high performance and sports science teachers in the three universities in Fiji.

“We also need to go out to the primary schools and provide educational programmes that provide a non-contact experience where they learn the principles of the game and also engage in health and fitness exercises earlier on in life. Then we’ll have the tag, flag and tackle programmes in which young kids can learn and play rugby league in a safe environment.

“This will be targeted at children the ages four to eight.”

Meanwhile, Bellsham confirmed he was also preparing the Fiji Residents for the test match with the Prime Minister’s 13 in September in Australia.

“We’ve got about 10 weeks to prepare for this test match and it’s a daunting task especially considering our opponents will also consist of NRL players so we’ll be working really hard,” he said.

“The players have a good base but they lack the individual skills and technique which is something that we’re working on. As far as the development of the sport goes they’ve grasped the concept of what we’re trying to achieve so that’s a good sing.

“Any players wishing to be part of this development programme and be a part of the squad are most welcome to join us for training every Tuesday and Thursday at Albert Park.

“Fiji is a sleeping giant in the sport and I believe that with the right amount of work, dedication and the right direction to help identify the natural talents, Fiji can excel to the same heights in rugby league that they hold in sevens rugby.”
