A farming parent of Delakado Village in Tailevu yesterday shed tears after witnessing his son scoop a top award at their school cadet passing-out parade.

Peni Bati, 35, could not hold back his emotions when his youngest son, Sikeli Naucukidi, 13, walked away with the Best Overall Commander prize during the Dawasamu District School’s cadet passing-out parade.

Mr Bati said the six week-training showed positive improvement in his son’s behaviour towards his school work.

“He was never once a leader since he started Year One, but this year we were surprised that he was chosen headboy of the school,” he said.

“I know that the tears I shed for his achievement today are also a testimony to the hard work he’s been putting in to acknowledge us for the struggles we have been making for him and his sister.”

Sikeli wants to be an accountant in the future. He said if this would come to naught, he would then either join one of the security forces. Meanwhile, Nemani Tamani scooped the Best All Around cadet award. He said his achievement paved the way towards achieving his childhood dream of becoming a Republic of Fiji Military Forces officer.

More than 100 students from Year Five to Eight took part yesterday.
