The people of Cicia in the northern Lau Group are seeking a revival of the copra industry and the co-operative scheme on the island because, they say, it will bring prosperity to the people there.

The plea was made to a visiting Government delegation led by Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu.

Cicia District Council head Epeli Draunidalo said when the copra industry was thriving on the island it was one of the best times for its people.

“The co-operative business operation is relevant to our iTaukei society and our traditional way of life in working together (solesolevaki),” he said.

Mr Draunidalo said even before the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF) was set up, those working in the copra business were already making deductions for their savings account under what was known as the Fiji Development Fund (Lavo Musuki ni Niu).

Meanwhile, Commissioner Eastern Luke Moroivalu is optimistic the industry can be revived to boost the island’s economy.

“I’m sure we can revive it.”
