In another FijiFirst move, Government has announced that it will be paying schools fees for kindergarten or preschool students.

This is good news to parents after Government started its free school education initiative before and after September 2014 General Elections.

This means parents of kindergarten students will not pay fees starting from next term.

Preschool students will receive $50 per child per term.

The Assistant Minister for Education, Vijay Nath confirmed this yesterday.

“Children over five years will be assisted and will not have to pay. About 14000 students will benefit from this Government initiative. We have 945 recognised centres, of which 386 on school site and 559 stand alone centres which include 55 private schools,” he said.

The news was commended by parents this newspaper spoke to yesterday.

Merewalesi Waranatabua, a parent of Laxmi Narayan Kindergarten at Vatuwaqa, Suva, said, “I am really happy with this initiative. It is a big relief for us.

“When my daughter enrolled this term, we had to pay the full amount. I paid $120 for her fees, but I thank the Bainimarama Government.”

Another parent Kiran Lata said the assistance would see parents encouraging their children to attend school.

“This is good for me and my family and I feel happy that I will not be paying fees from next term. It has relieved some of our expenses. It will also encourage parents to send their children to preschool,” she said.
