A graduate’s upbringing at a small cane farming settlement in Ba had motivated him to achieving greater things in life.

This was finally paid off for Ravindra Chand after he graduated with a Trade Diploma in Civil Engineering and awarded a gold medal during the Fiji National University’s graduation at the Vodafone Arena in Laucala yesterday.

An excited Mr Chand said his father’s uneducated and sugarcane cutting background proved to be one of the motivational factors in him being successful throughout his education.

He also credited his older brother Ravinesh Chand, a former double gold medallist for the University of the South Pacific last year as an inspiration in his success.

Meanwhile, second gold medalist and Bachelor of Science in Agriculture graduate Ravneel Kumar was speechless after receiving his award yesterday.

“I believe if children wants to succeed in life, then they should listen and obey their parents because this brings blessings,” Mr Kumar said.

The 23-year-old said students should be capable of thinking broadly when it came to choosing their careers.

“Some of my friends and family were asking of my choice of taking up agriculture, but I did not take into consideration what they think. I worked on my dreams and now I’ve become the best and this is dedicated especially to my parents,” he said.

The pair was among the 905 students who graduated from the Fiji National University (FNU) yesterday.
