Need To Install Chief

There are concerns about the iTaukei chiefly positions left vacant around the country.

iTaukei Lands and Fisheries Commission chairman Ratu Isireli Vananalagi Vesikula reminded the Bua Provincial Council members that it was important to install a leader in the vanua.

“Government wants to work with those leading the vanua in terms of developing the people and their resources,” Ratu Isireli said during the two-day Bua Provincial Council meeting at Naulumatua House in Nabouwalu, Bua, on Thursday.

“This is why it’s very important to install the rightful iTaukei leaders such as a chief or a leader of the clan in a village or district in a province.

“When development takes place sometimes we need their consent or signature especially for fishing rights.”

He said installing the right person would make their work easy in verifying who to get consent from when development needs to take place.

He said Government is relying on the vanua to make their stand on the installation of a chief, clan headman or land owning unit headman.

“It’s the sole responsibility of the vanua to choose the right person. It’s not the duty of Government to have a say on those that have to be elected or installed in to that position,” Ratu Isireli said.

He said those leaders or chiefs installed would provide a helping hand to the Native Lands Commission.

“When they are registered as the rightful holder it will be easy for us in the future when there are disputes, we can clearly map out where the position was passed down from,” Ratu Isireli said.

“That’s why we are urging them to install someone in the vacant position so that they can help us during difficult times especially during disputes.

“It will help us track back the movement the position was passed.”
